  15. <p>     DEATH REVEALED. SALAH JADID, 63, former Syrian strongman and
  16. one of the world's longest-held political prisoners, jailed
  17. for the past 23 years; of a heart attack; in Damascus. Having
  18. seized power from a more moderate faction of his own Baath Party
  19. in 1966, Jadid was ousted four years later by a Baath ally turned
  20. rival, Hafez Assad, who remains Syria's President. Assad moved
  21. against Jadid following the 1970 defeat of Syrian forces that
  22. Jadid had sent across the border to help Palestinians fight
  23. King Hussein of Jordan. Jordanian units crushed the Syrians
  24. when Assad, then Defense Minister, refused to give them air
  25. cover.
