- <p> DEATH REVEALED. SALAH JADID, 63, former Syrian strongman and
- one of the world's longest-held political prisoners, jailed
- for the past 23 years; of a heart attack; in Damascus. Having
- seized power from a more moderate faction of his own Baath Party
- in 1966, Jadid was ousted four years later by a Baath ally turned
- rival, Hafez Assad, who remains Syria's President. Assad moved
- against Jadid following the 1970 defeat of Syrian forces that
- Jadid had sent across the border to help Palestinians fight
- King Hussein of Jordan. Jordanian units crushed the Syrians
- when Assad, then Defense Minister, refused to give them air
- cover.
